Karen Halliday's Star Trek Original Series (TOS) Annotated Fanzine Index

About this Zinedex

Title Index       Author Index       Bibliographic list

Welcome! This is an annotated index to printed amateur, fan-written fiction based on the characters and/or universe of the original Star Trek series (known as "TOS").

All TOS zines for which I have found any information are included in the Title Index and Bibliographic listing. The
Zines At present, only zines I have actually read - or at least perused - and annotated are included.

Annotations are entirely my own opinions and include spoilers because I wrote them to jog my own memory, not as teasers to entice the reader.

An asterisk (sometimes two) denotes a story I particularly enjoyed - a purely personal designation. (I have a strong bias toward good McCoy stories, and generally prefer romps and H/C to action/adventure. Like many fan-fic readers, I tend to sneer at Mary Sues.)

Some terminology I use in the Zinedex that you may want to know:

Alternate Universe (AU)
Stories involving the counterparts of “our” Star Trek characters, in some other universe. For example, there are many stories involving a planet Vulcan on which humans are held in slavery.
Crossover(X... e.g, TOS X TNG)
Stories involving elements from some other television/film series as well as those from Star Trek.
Get-'Em
Death stories. (This is something Paramount won't let the pros do.)
Hurt/Comfort (H/C)
Somebody suffers physical and/or emotional trauma; somebody else provides the comfort. Probably the (bloodied) backbone of Star Trek fan-fiction.
Mary Sue
A beautiful young female (usually considered to be the author’s alter-ego) comes aboard the Enterprise and performs startling feats, generally while romancing one or more of the main characters, and saves the ship/crew/planet/mission...
Mirror Universe
Stories of the ISS Enterprise from the episode “Mirror, Mirror”
Romance
Stories with a major focus on a love-interest. Separated from "Mary Sue" by more believable, rounded characters.
Spoof
Satire or parody on some episode, etc. Names may be changed, characters exaggerated, etc. The Mary Sue genre is a favorite spoof target.
Romp
Light-hearted stories that may involve adventure, comedy, or downright farce, but with the characters kept in character as the author leads them on a wild ride, usually with little, if any, blood or breast-beating.
Adult
Stories with explicit sexual situations. These include:
Slash (K/S; S/Mc...)
Stories involving a same-sex relationship among two or more of the main characters. The term comes from the abbreviation “K/S” used to designate stories based on a sexual relationship between Kirk and Spock (as opposed to “K&S” used to designate stories which focus on a perhaps passionate, but not sexual, friendship between the two). Slash stories generally include explicit sexual situations.
